A word from the founder
Maya Ibrahimchah
Beit el Baraka is a Lebanon-based charity that provides dignity to retirees and children by offering them food, healthcare, decent housing, and equal access to education.
But charity alone is not sufficient for addressing the immense problem of poverty in Lebanon, so Beit el Baraka strives to address the source of this problem through a holistic approach. Given that unemployment is the foundation of poverty, and poverty is our greatest problem, then establishing employment opportunities, through teaching skills and supporting promising small businesses is thus crucial to achieving sustainable socioeconomic development. What would happen if we enabled charity dependent people to become productive members of the workforce? What if we could unlock the vast potential of Lebanon’s women? Beit el Baraka salutes the indomitable power of the individual and the small family-run businesses that are the engine of opportunity around the world. The best chances to defeat our biggest problems will come from small, private-sector solutions, not from further dependency on massive NGOs and corporations. Small “cottage” enterprises have the capacity to improve societal issues, thanks to their speed to market.
The primary objective of Beit el Baraka is thus to facilitate the transition of charity beneficiaries into self-reliant producers by identifying sustainable employment prospects, teaching new skills, and supporting local crafts in rural micro-economies. Beit el Baraka’s vision is based on individual and community empowerment as the key to breaking the cycles of dependency. We invest in endeavors that we are confident will have a lasting positive effect on society. At that juncture, the circle will come full, and Beit el Baraka would have accomplished its mission.

“Charity is not a sustainable solution to fight poverty. For four years now, we have been providing food, healthcare services, decent housing, and education to thousands of families of elders and children. Because our approach is holistic, we at Beit el Baraka are impact-driven, working to solve problems from their core by creating integrative models. With poverty being our biggest problem, and unemployment lying at the core of poverty, the creation of employment opportunities is essential to achieving sustainable socio-economic development. So what if we started training members from our families to become producers? What if we started providing our family members with the necessary skills that would enable them to start working and providing for their elders and/or children? Small impact-driven businesses can set out to solve a societal problem because they are built to deliver. They prioritize impact, value, and purpose, and they can drive social transformation and economic development, potentially expanding productive and remunerative jobs, which can lead to a reduction in poverty. When this starts to happen, the circle will be closed, and Beit el Baraka would have served its purpose.”
